《晋书》(Jìn Shū), a work documenting the history of the Jìn Dynasty (晋, 265 - 420). It was written by Táng Dynasty (唐, 618 - 907) historian 房玄龄 (Fáng Xuán Líng)
During the Sixteen Kingdoms Period (五胡十六国 | wǔ hú shí liù guó | 304 - 439), 石勒 (Shí Lè), the ruler of the state of 后赵 (Hòu Zhào, or the Later Zhao) threw a banquet. After several rounds of drinks, everyone was slightly drunk, and the 石勒 turned to his minister 徐光 (Xú Guāng) and asked loudly, "How do I compare to the great leaders of old?"
徐光 grew terrified, and he promptly compared his leader's intellect and power to that of the 刘邦 (Liú Bāng), the founder of the Hàn Dynasty (汉, 206 BC - 220 AD), and 曹操 (Cáo Cāo), the warlord and later ruler of what became the state of 魏 (Wèi, 220 - 280).
However, 石勒 countered this praise, saying, "If I were ever to meet 刘邦, I would certainly be a loyal servant. In fact, I would vie with [刘邦's great generals] 韩信 (Hán Xìn) and 彭越 (Péng Yuè) to see who among us was the strongest. However, if I were to meet the Hàn emperor 刘秀 (Liú Xiù), then I would go hunting with him and see at whose hand the deer would fall."
