磨杵成针 (mó chǔ chéng zhēn)
The 杵 (chǔ) in this chengyu refers to a small stick or club, like a pestle (from a mortar and pestle) or the stick used to beat clothing (as a method of laundering)
《方舆胜览》(Fāng Yú Shèng Lǎn), a work by 祝穆 (Zhù Mù) of the Southern Sòng Dynasty (南宋 | 1127 - 1279)
It has been said that when the great Táng Dynasty (唐, 618 - 907) poet 李白 (Lǐ Bái) was young, he was a lazy student who rarely completed his work. One day, he was walking by a small brook when he happened upon a woman with steel rods. He asked her what she was doing.
"I'm grinding these down into needles," she replied.
李白 was struck by her tenacity and spirit, and so he went home and finished his studies.
