《韩非子》(Hán Fēi Zǐ), a book of philosophy authored by 韩非 (Hán Fēi) during the Warring States Period (475 - 220 BC)
In the Warring States period (471 - 221 BC), the ruler of the state of Qí (齐), 齐桓公 (Qí Huán Gōng) and his prime minister 管仲 (Guǎn Zhòng) personally led an army to invade a dangerous group of people living in the north.
By the time winter came, 齐桓公's troops had defeated the enemy, and they happily started their trip home. However, they soon ran into a serious problem -- because winter had drastically changed the appearance of the land, they got lost and ended up trapped in a deep valley with no way out.
Eventually, 管仲 (Guǎn Zhòng) came up with an idea, and he went and told 齐桓公 that they should see whether some of the army's older horses would be able to find their way home by themselves. With no other options and the threat of the whole army dying of starvation at hand, the ruler agreed. 管仲 immediately found several old steeds and let them wander freely around camp, and eventually, all of them started walking in one direction. The entire army followed closely behind, and sure enough, the horses soon led them directly to the path home.
