《山海经》(Shān Hǎi Jīng), or the Classic of Mountains and Seas in English. The author is unknown, but the work is estimated to come from the Warring States Period (战国时期 | zhàn guó shí qī | 475 - 221 BC). Its contents detail mythology, geography, social customs, and more.
Thousands and thousands of years ago, the legendary 炎帝 (Yán Dì) ruled the land. He had a daughter named 女娲 (Nǚ Wá), and he loved her the most of all his children. One day, when 女娲 was a young woman, she took a boat across the sea (东海 | dōng hǎi). When out on the water, a great wave crashed atop her vessel, and she was thrown overboard and met her end.
However, 女娲's spirit was not content with such a demise. It transformed itself into a great bird called 精卫 (Jīng Wèi) and vowed revenge on the sea that had stolen her young life. 精卫 set up a home on 发鸠山 (fā jiū shān), and from that moment on, she spent every moment of her day taking sticks and pebbles from the mountain and throwing them into the sea so that she could fill it
