  • Entry Notes

There is a LOT of history in this chengyu, and I've only covered the absolute bare minimum for the story to make sense. (Like, a whole TV show has been made about 岳飞 (Yuè Fēi), the general in the story.) I strongly recommend reading on the Jin-Song Wars and related info for additional context

  • Origin

《宋史》(Sòng Shǐ, or the "History of Song"), a work written by the high-ranking Yuán Dynasty (元, 1271 - 1386) politician 脱脱 (Tuō Tuō, or Toqto'a). The piece documents the history of the Sòng Dynasty (宋, 960 - 1279). Note: The Yuán Dynasty was founded and ruled by Mongols, not ethnic Chinese. 脱脱/Toqto'a is a Mongol name.

  • Story

During the Sòng Dynasty (宋, 960 - 1279), there was a group of Jurchen people (女真, nǚ zhēn) that lived in the north of modern-day China. In 1115, the Jurchen founded the Jīn Dynasty (金, 1115 - 1234), and they soon launched an attack on Sòng. In the beginning, the Jīn defeated the Sòng soundly, even managing to capture the emperor and a significant number of members of the imperial court. However, some members of the Sòng royal family were able to escape, and they fled to the south of China, re-established their government, and resumed attacks on their invaders.

One of the Sòng generals leading the counter-attacks was named 岳飞 (Yuè Fēi). He had reportedly risen from humble beginnings to become a soldier and then a great military leader, and he reportedly treated his soldiers extremely well while also maintaining a strict form of discipline. In his battles against the Jīn, he managed to recover a great deal of the land that the Sòng had lost, and after one particularly decisive victory, it seemed like retaking even more land from the Jīn was just a matter of time. This made 岳飞 ecstatic, and he told his troops to march directly to 黄龙 (Huáng Lóng, the capital of the 金 Dynasty).

However, the current Sòng emperor began to fear that if 岳飞 were successful, the the emperor that the 金 had taken captive would be released, and a power struggle would ensue. He sued the 金 for peace, 岳飞 was ordered to return home, and the attack on 黄龙 never happened.
