  • Origin

《战国策》(Zhàn Gúo Cè, Strategies of the Warring States), a work which chronicled the Warring States Period (475 - 220 BC)

  • Story

During the Warring States Period (战国时期 | Zhàn Guó Shí Qī, 475 - 221 BC), there was a man from the kingdom of Chǔ Guó (楚国) named 养由基 (Yǎng Yóu Jī). 养由基 was an archer, and he was so skilled that if he fired a hundred arrows at a willow tree from a hundred paces away, every single one of those arrows would strike the tree's center.

In general, 养由基's skill drew the praise and admiration of many. However, one day there was a passerby who saw 养由基 firing his hundreds of arrows, and he said, "I could teach this guy how to shoot."

养由基 heard his remarks and replied, "Everyone says that I shoot very well, and yet you say you have things to teach me. Why don't you come over here and try shooting at this willow tree yourself!"

The passerby responded, "I can't teach you the actual mechanics of shooting. However, have you never considered that if you're good at shooting but not good at resting, shooting repeatedly will only exhaust you? Then you won't be able to shoot a single arrow, and your previous efforts will be wasted."
