《道德经》(Dào Dé Jīng), a sacred Daoist text written by Daoism founder 老子 (Lǎo Zǐ)
老子 (Lǎo Zǐ) was a philosopher during the Spring and Autumn Period (春秋时期, chūn qiú shí qī | 770 - 476 BC). He lamented the current state of society and believed that continued social development would only cause suffering, and so he longed for the society of a “small country with few people (小国寡民 (xiǎo guó guǎ mín)).” He described this kind of society as one where "people were well-fed and well-clothed, lived comfortably, and were satisfied with current social customs." Furthermore, "people would stay within their own countries for their entire lives and wouldn't engage with those outside the borders."
