  • Entry Notes

The story of 司马徽 recommending the two strategists is from the famous work "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms." What I have written below is heavily summarized, and I recommend looking into the actual novel for more details. (I personally learned a lot from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms podcast by John Zhu. Check it out here)

  • Origin

《世说新语》(Shì Shuō Xīn Yǔ) by southern Sòng Dynasy (南宋, 1127 - 1279) writer 刘义庆 (Liú Yì Qìng). Known in English as "A New Account of the Tales of the World,"《世说新语》is a collection of anecdotes, conversations, and remarks on historic personalities

  • Story

Towards the end of the Eastern Hàn Dynasty (东汉 | dōng hàn, 25 - 220) there lived a reclusive scholar named 司马徽 (Sī Mǎ Huī). Some resources say that 司马徽 was known for saying 好 in response to everything that happened or was said, regardless of whether that was the appropriate response or not. For example, it is said that one day his neighbor came over to tell him that his son had passed away, and 司马徽 responded, "好!"

司马徽 was also known for never mentioning anyone's faults and for being good at identifying talent. It is for this reason that one of the famous warlord 刘备 (Liú Bèi) called upon him when he was searching for a military strategist. 司马徽 recommended the strategists 诸葛亮 (Zhū Gě Liàng) and 庞统 (Páng Tǒng), both of whom were instrumental to 刘备's later successes
