《三国演义》(Sān Guó Yǎn Yì), usually attributed to Míng Dynasty (明, 1368 - 1644) author 罗贯中 (Luó Guàn Zhōng). Considered one of the four great Chinese classics, this part-fiction, part-history book romances the events of the Three Kingdoms period (三国时期 | Sān Guó Shí Qī | 220 - 280) and is generally known in English as "Romance of the Three Kingdoms"
Towards the end of the Eastern Hàn Dynasty (东汉 | dōng hàn, 25 - 220), internal turmoil was widespread, and various political factions were growing in power. One of the most powerful factions was headed by the warlord 刘备 (Liú Bèi), who enlisted the young but brilliant 诸葛亮 (Zhū Gě Liàng) to be his military strategist. 诸葛亮 was a scholar who lived in a thatched hut in the middle of the woods when he met 刘备 for the first time, and it was around this time that another rival faction was launching an attack. 诸葛亮 agreed to leave his solitary life in his hut and help 刘备, and he devised his first-ever military plan to counter the incoming attack. His plan was a success and left attacking army of 曹 (Cáo) completely defeated
