三顾草庐 (sān gù cǎo lú)
I learned about this story through the excellent Romance of the Three Kingdoms podcast by John Zhu. You should check it out here
This story is part of 三国演义 (Sān Guó Yǎn Yì, Romance of the Three Kingdoms), one of China's four great classical works.
《出师表》(Chū Shī Biǎo), an essay written by the famous statesman and strategist 诸葛亮 (Zhū Gě Liàng) during the Three Kingdoms period (220-280 BC). Note: 诸葛 is the surname and 亮 is the given name.
In the waning days of the Eastern Han Dynasy (东汉, Dōng Hàn, 25 - 220), the warlord 刘备 (Liú Bèi) and his two sworn brothers, 关羽 (Guān Yǔ) and 张飞 (Zhāng Fēi), traveled to the cottage of the reclusive scholar 诸葛亮 (Zhū Gě Liàng) to ask him to serve as 刘备's military strategist. When they arrived, however, they learned that 诸葛亮 was not present, so they left. Later, they tried a second time, but again, he was not present. Finally, they tried a third time, and this time, 诸葛亮 was present. After some discussion, 刘备 was able to convince 诸葛亮 to join his campaign, and with the strategist's help, he was able to gain considerable power and eventually form the Shǔ Hàn (蜀汉) kingdom, one of the three kingdoms during the Three Kingdoms period (220-280).
