  • Origin

《儒林外史》(Rù Lín Wài Shǐ), a satirical piece on China's imperial examination system. It was written by Qīng Dynasty (清, 1644 - 1911) author 吴敬梓 (Wú Jìng Zǐ) and is known in English as "The Scholars" or "Unofficial History of Scholars"

  • Story

During the Míng Dynasty (明, 1368 - 1644), the emperor forbade the slaughter of cattle. This upset the resident Muslim population greatly, and they tried to find ways to evade the emperor's order.

In one village, many Muslims worked together and sent fifty 斤 (jīn, or about 1 lb or 0.5 kilos) of beef to the town magistrate as a bribe. The town magistrate, 汤奉 (Tāng Fèng), was also Muslim and really wanted to eat the meat he'd received, but he was too nervous at the prospect of disobeying the emperor's order and didn't know what to do.

Now, at the time that the bribe arrived at 汤奉's house, two other government officials, 张静斋 (Zhāng Jìng Zhāi) and 范进 (Fàn Jìn), were visiting. 汤奉 turned to the both of them and asked for recommendations as to how to proceed. 张静斋 immediately replied that as a government official, 汤奉 had to put the emperor first. He also suggested that those who had delivered the bribe needed to be beaten and locked into a cangue, and that the delivered meat should then be piled atop that cangue. If this meticulous response were ever seen by higher-ups, 张静斋 declared, then 汤奉 would surely be promoted.

汤奉 simply nodded, and he took the official's advice.
